Powerlung Sport

Last year we reviewed the PowerLung, an effective device that gives your lungs a workout and improves lung capacity, oxygen intake, shortness of breath, etc. We discussed how they work, benefits, and why PowerLung is superior to their competitors. We continue to receive questions from our customers about specific competing models, so here we are providing a more in-depth look at Powerlung vs. others on the market such as UltraBreathe, Expand-a-Lung, SportsBreather, PowerBreathe, etc.

PowerLung is completely different than the majority of these devices. The PowerLung works based on threshold resistance while most the competing units work based on restrictive resistance. The restrictive resistance models have shown to provide no benefit to the user, and can even cause negative effects. In addition, PowerLung works both your inhale and exhale muscles.

Restrictive Resistance

Breathing improvement devices such as SportsBreather (formerly “The Breather), UltraBreathe, and Expand-a-Lung use restrictive resistance.

We can keep this simple, because it really is: Imagine breathing through a straw, that’s all it is. These devices may look fancy because you can adjust the opening, but you could achieve the same effect by using different sized straws. In fact, the inventor of Expand-a-Lung said himself in Swimming Technique Magazine that “they take any pipe they can find, cap it, put a mouthpiece on it and put a pinhole through it… mine is no different…”.

In a study of COPD patients, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of California found you may not get any benefit from these types of devices even if you increase the amount you use it and even it you decrease the size of the opening. This peer-reviewed study was conducted by Michael J. Belman, MD, and published in 1990.

So, for devices that use restrictive breathing, you can do it yourself free. it is called whistling. While you may be able to carry a nice tune, it will not improve your breathing function any more than these models will.

Threshold Resistance

PowerLung uses threshold resistance, which is similar to lifting weights. The weight creates resistance, forcing your muscles to work in order to move them. The more you lift weights, the stronger your muscles become. This is virtually identical to what you are doing with PowerLung, your breathing power is forcing the movement of the mechanism of the device. Independent studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of threshold resistance in improving breathing.

With threshold resistance, you are moving something with your muscles, not just blowing air.

There are other units on the market that use threshold resistance, like the PowerBreathe. However, unlike the PowerLung, these devices only work your inhale muscles. You may breath in and out of them, but when exhaling, there is no resistance. PowerLung works both the inhale and exhale muscles of your lungs, and the resistance may be easily set differently for each.

Other Considerations

Unlike others, PowerLung is made in the USA, comes with a DVD guide, and carrying case, and has toll free phone support. In addition, PowerLung is the only device on the market with independent testing that indicates a 25% increase in lung capacity and a 20% increase in respiratory power. Keep in mind that many other device manufacturers may site research studies, but in virtually all cases these studies were not independent and were performed by the manufacturer.

We highly recommend the PowerLung line of products, and hope that you contact us if you have any questions. You may find the PowerLung on our Better Health Innovations site for more information: Click Here for PowerLung Information.

Full Disclosure: We could be accused of being biased, as we sell the PowerLung line on BetterHealthInnovations.com, but we have been approached by several of their competitors and declined carrying their models because they either don’t work at all or they don’t work as well.

The properties of magnets were first noticed in ancient times by Thales of Miletus, a philosopher, possibly the first philosopher in the true ancient Greek tradition. Thales was born around 624 BC and stubbornly refused to accept supernatural or superstitious explanations for the events around him. Many regard him as the Father of Science. A son of noble parents, Thales received a good education and and travelled to Egypt where he applied his mind to using geometry to work out the height of pyramids.

Thales is an a clear case where the term Renaissance man’ is a misnomer, he was an expert philosopher and mathematician as well as engaging in what was surely the first ever case of options trading, yet he was born almost two thousand years before the renaissance. When he bought an option to use all the olive presses in his home town, predicting a particularly good harvest, it was not, we are told, because he was looking to make money, but because he wanted to prove he could make money by using his wits, and not leaving things up to the gods. One of the most famous stories about Thales concerns a battle between the Lydians and the Medes. Part of a war which had continued for five years, the Battle of Halys came to an end with an eclipse of the sun which had been predicted by Thales. The participants were so awed by the event they made peace immediately.

The story of magnetism may begin in ancient Greece, but it doesn’t end there. In the two centuries following Thales magnets became known in ancient India and China, but it was over a thousand years until the Chinese scientists Shen Ko first used a magnetic compass needle for navigation. By 1187 that knowledge was available in Europe and the world changed.

Before the invention of the compass, all long sea journeys had to be at night (when it was possible to navigate by the stars) or during the day, in site of land. The journey from Greece to Egypt was made around the coast of the Mediterranean, a much greater distance than the voyage across. The discovery of the compass paved the way for the great voyages of discovery, amongst them the discovery of America.

In 1600 William Gilbert postulated that it was the magnetic nature of the Earth itself which attracted the compass needle; before that the common belief was that there was a magnetic island at the North Pole, or even that the needle was attracted by the North star itself.
In the 19th century the work of Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell began to unravel the mysteries of magnetism and electricity and in the 20th, Nicola Tesla went further than even Edison, using magnets to create alternating current.

But why should this be of any real interest to you?

For years magnets have been viewed as possible treatments for a number of conditions, from sleeplessness to back pain and arthritis and numerous medical studies have been done to investigate their efficacy. Using knowledge built over all those centuries, our Therion magnetic mattress topper pads use modern technology to build powerful magnets into a mattress pad which can soothe you while you sleep.

Physiotherapy is kind of new, or so I always thought. So I was surprised when the very nice man who tortured me in hospital told me that Hippocrates himself had used massage, manipulation and hydrotherapy to treat patients. Physical therapy it seems is as old as the science of medicine, dating back at least to 460 BC, and on the biggest problems physical therapists face is the varying degree’s of fitness in their patients. We all know that if you don’t use it, you loose it, but a degree of fitness is required just in order to take exercise. Not all therapies suit all patients, and while walking sounds nice and gentle, you can’t walk if you cant support your own weight, so something as fundamental as using your legs can be a problem. This is a common problem for anyone attempting serious weight loss. If you are already overweight you may find the exercise is as bad for you as the extra weight you carry, but you still need to exercise, so what do you do?
The answer to this problem has been around a long time. The exercise bicycle was first developed in 1796, when it was known as the Gymnasticon and was used primarily as a treatment for ‘gout and debility’. The inventor, Francis Lowndes, created the device specifically to help invalids, those who were physically incapable of powering the machine themselves, so there was an external crank which could be used to put their limbs through the necessary motion. It was something of a bonus when the device was used to provide exercise for the able bodied whose motivation wasn’t recovery from illness, but physical fitness.
Which brings us to the present day. An exercise bike is one of the most useful pieces of exercise equipment; it allows you to exercise without impact on your knees and ankles; keeps your legs mobile and your body out of the cold and the rain, so how do you choose?
You need a solid base that won’t tip over, and ideally allow you to stand if you want to. The bikes resistance should be adjustable so you can work at a speed you are comfortable with and the handlebars should be non slip. If you’ve ever been on an exercise bike you’ll know that one thing, more than anything else, makes the difference to your comfort, and that’s the seat. So when you choose an exercise bike look for one with as many adjustments as possible, especially in the seating area. Many bikes allow you to modify seat height, but the human body comes in all shapes and sizes, some exercise bikes, like the Stamina CPS 9200, allows you to change the seat position horizontally as well as vertically, so you can be sure of a perfect fit. The final thing to look for? Wheels.
You can find more information about the Stamina CPS 9200 exercise bike on our Better Health Innovations Site.

We were recently introduced to the DPL Therapy System. “DPL” stands for “Deep Penetrating Light”. The DPL is a FDA approved/cleared system with infrared and red LED lights used for pain treatment and skin rejuvenation. This review includes our impressions of the DPL from out of the box to real usage on a variety of skin and pain conditions. I also describe the technology behind the system.

LED Therapy Advances Through NASA Research

LED technology developed by NASA for plant growth experimentation indicated that this technology could be effective in promoting human tissue growth and wound healing. LEDs do not produce significant heat and were selected for their plant growth experiments in space. After the success of this application of LEDs, NASA looked to them for helping astronauts heal from injuries.

While in space, astronauts are subject to muscle and bone atrophy. Also, injures that happen in space will tend not to heal until the astronaut returns to Earth. NASA found that infrared light activates color sensitive chemicals within the cells. NASA found the most effective wavelengths of light to be 680, 730, and 880 nm, and that these wavelengths improve wound healing. Also, DNA synthesis in muscle cells quintupled with a single application of light at these wavelengths.

Following the successful testing by NASA, other organizations successfully tested LED technology for healing, pain relief, and skin therapy. The DPL system was classified as a Class II Medical Device and cleared for over the counter use.

The DPL is made to NASA specifications: 4 joules per square cm and wavelengths of 660 nm & 880 nm. As far as I know, it is the only home unit on the market made to these specs.

DPL Out Of The Box

Unpacking the unit, it is obviously a quality piece of equipment, similar in fit and finish to other medical grade devices. In the box, we find the two LED panels, straps, a stand, power supply, user guide and quick-start guide.

The DPL Therapy System has a total of 154 Infrared LEDs (880 nm wavelength) and 20 Red LEDs (660 nm wavelength). These are the same wavelengths that were found effective through the NASA experimentation.

The quick start guide very nice, and had us using the DPL within a few minutes of unpacking. We liked the user guide as well, providing more detailed information. It is an easy device to use. For facial skin rejuvenation, one simply uses the DPL on the included stand, pointing your nose at the center of the unit. For pain relief, the Velcro straps allow for the unit to be secured to where you hurt (elbow, back, knee, foot, etc).

We tried the DPL on various people around the office for a variety of conditions. Since it is a rather private matter, I changed the names in the descriptions below.

Using the DPL for Acne Skin Care

Amy is in her early twenties and has had moderate acne for the past ten years or so. She was interested in trying the DPL system out to prevent new outbreaks and to help heal scaring from previous acne. Following the directions, she used the DPL for one cycle (17 minutes) once per day, five days a week. “There was a little bit of warmth, which felt kind of nice. I actually thought it was pretty relaxing and after the 2nd or 3rd time I started listening to my iPod while using it as kind of a mid-day break.” For results, Amy found that “It may have been my imagination, but I thought that I started to see results after a few days. After a few weeks, I definitely had less new acne and at five weeks my sister mentioned that the old scarring was much less noticeable.”

Using the DPL for a Sore Knee

Dave has had knee issues for years. In the past he has used hot and cold therapy, but had the best success in minimizing pain by using a magnetic knee brace. Shortly after we received the DPL unit, Dave had a flare-up in his knee. He used the Velcro straps to position the panels on either side of his knee. Dave said that the DPL System provided “fairly quick relief, similar to putting a heating pad on, but more comfortable.” He reported a tingling feeling on the surface of the skin and relief of pain in the joint. He’s used it a few more times over the past several weeks with similar results.

Using the DPL for a Sore Back

This was my own personal experience. With the weather warming, I overdid it a little when planting new grass in the front yard. That evening I put the DPL System on my lower back using the Velcro straps. For me, I was not very impressed with the Velcro straps for my back. For the short time (17 minutes) that it is on, I found it easier to lay face-down and position the two panels on my back. I think that the Velcro system would work better for a knee, elbow, foot, etc.

I found there to be little “sensation”. The unit may have provided a bit of warmth, but not nearly “hot”. I found pain relief after the second application. The first 17 minutes may have helped, but as not much as I had hoped. I did find relief when I used the DPL later in the day and the next. The relief was similar to what I would feel after using a heating pad (relaxation of the muscles), but I thought that it was deeper relief than with what a heating pad would typically do.

Bottom Line

I like the versatility and effectiveness of the DPL Light System. After testing around the office, I now have a unit in my home where it is mainly being used by me, my wife, and my daughter for facial skin rejuvenation. I feel that it is a better solution for pain relief than a heating pad, and a also provides impressive results in terms of skin healing.

The technology has been thoroughly tested and the DPL has been cleared by the FDA, so I feel that this is a safe way to get the results you are looking for.

This study, which is in the news today, brings something to mind that happened last year with my father’s knee pain.

The New England Journal of Medicine published a $12.5 million study saying that, for most people, glucosamine and chondroitin do not soothe knee pain much better than a placebo. I know quite a few people who take glucosamine for joint pain.

The supplements are promoted for anyone with joint pain, including people who suffer from the most common type of arthritis, osteoarthritis. According to the study, which followed 1,583 osteoarthritis (also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease) patients, glucosamine and chondroitin are broken down during digestion and there’s no evidence that they are incorporated into the deteriorating cartilage that is characteristic of the disease. Before embarking on my personal story about joint pain in the knee and its treatment, you can read the entire article about this recent study in the Washington Post.

My father, who is 73 years old, has suffered from knee pain for the past few years. Last summer my folks were visiting our home in Pennsylvania (they live in Massachusetts). He was having a lot of trouble getting up the stairs from our finished basement, which serves as our guest room. Previously in the year, he received two Cortisone shots in his right knee. The first one worked well, and allowed him to have no trouble keeping up with the family at Disney World. The second one did not provide nearly as much relief as the first, and he was scheduled for a third.

My father is not exactly on the cutting edge of alternative medicine. In fact, I am sure that he thinks of it as a bunch of hooey. Many of you reading this from my hometown following us on Facebook, know that he is a no-nonsense tell-it-like-it-is kind of guy and that his many years as a Chief of Police may have made him a tad bit cynical. So he stops by my office during his visit to PA and I recommended a magnetic knee brace that we carry. His response was pretty much what I expected, but eventually he said “what the hell”, dropped his pants and put it on right in the office!

The design of the brace was the same as one he had received from a doctor in Massachusetts, but with large 12,800 gauss neodymium magnets. Much to his surprise, his knee was much improved before the end of his visit! He continued to wear it and actually canceled his Cortisone shot! He has been here several time since, and there are no problems getting up the stairs. He no longer wears the magnetic brace every day, but he will when his knee starts to hurt a bit.

We have been carrying Therion Magnetic products for years, and we have had thousands of customer thrilled with the results. Even so, I never thought that my Dad would become a believer in magnetic therapy. You can read his review of the Therion Platinum Knee Brace right on the product page at our Better Health Innovations site. His review is the one left on 10/9/2009. For those of you who read the news about Glucosamine/Chondroitin, and are looking for a workable solution for joint pain, I can not think of a better testimonial.

The first time I went for a professional massage I was hesitant. I had been to the spa before and seen the massage therapists, none of them looked capable of giving my poor twisted muscles the workout I thought they needed. What I didn’t know was that professional masseurs use additional equipment, giving them power assisted muscles easily able to give mine the pummeling they needed without getting tired.

Massage was introduced to the United states in the 1850′s but didn’t become really popular until the 1970′s when it began to be used as a therapy for athletes. By 2007 18,000,000 adults and 700,000 children a year were receiving massage therapy.
Massage allows the body’s systems to be more efficient, relaxing tense muscles and blood vessels and improving blood flow. Massage also helps clear lactic acid from overloaded muscles by stimulating the lymphatic system, muscle tone is also improved, and best of all, no drugs are involved.

Massage equipment comes in an amazing range of sizes and prices, so that anyone, therapist, professional trainer or home user, can find something suitable.

The most suitable tool for professional massage, is the G5 Massager from General Physiotherapy Inc. Established in 1957 they not only make equipment for therapists and hospitals of all sizes; they manufacture a range of products for home use as well. G5 equipment is in use all over the world, in beauty spas for general massage and weight loss therapies, with sports trainers for chiropractic massage, and in hospitals for medical massage, for example of patients with respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and chronic emphysema as well as cystic fibrosis, occupational lung diseases and a number of other geriatirc disorders. All benefit from the G5′s percussive and directional stroking massage action.

So when you hear the word massage, perhaps the first thing you think of isn’t the most accurate picture, and if you’re a professional therapist and you haven’t checked out the G5 tools for professional massage, now’s the time.

All birds and mammals sleep, along with many fish, amphibians and reptiles. Scientists study sleep intensively, but they are still not sure exactly what is, and most especially what it is for. There are many contradictions. Babies of almost all species sleep far more than adults, yet in some marine mammals such as killer whales, new born babies don’t sleep at all for the first month of life. Some birds (as well as Dolphins) can sleep with one half of their brains, while the other remains awake. For the rest of us, sleep is a period of unconsciousness which usually occupies around one third of our day. Science continues to argue over it’s purpose, but what is agreed is that sleep is absolutely essential to health.
In a recent study scientists at the University of Warwick and at University College London found that lack of sleep can increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, while another study at the University of California showed that individuals who report getting 6 to 7 hours sleep each night live longer than those who don’t. But that’s not all.

In 2004 a study showed that wounds in mice heal more slowly when they are sleep deprived and in 2007 a further study showed that the immune systems of sleep deprived mice were compromised after only a 24 hour period. Research also shows that working memory is far less effective if you don’t get enough sleep. And there are countless other studies all showing the same thing. But do we really need scientific studies to tell us something we all know?

Without adequate sleep we all get cranky, ask any new parent, but sleep isn’t something we can all summon at will. Knowing how essential it is to get a solid 7 hours doesn’t help you get to sleep in the middle of the night when you can’t stop thoughts racing through your head. And this is yet another problem for scientists.

What exactly causes sleeplessness? Why can some people fall asleep easily while others find it extremely difficult? Sadly, we just don’t know. What we do know is that some factors which make sleep more difficult, such as noise, unfamiliar surroundings, depression, pain and anxiety. Equally some factors are known to promote sleep; darkness or dim light, gentle rocking, and certain rhythmic sounds, like rain, waves or the sound of a waterfall. But while we’d all love to own a house on the shore and fall asleep to the sounds of the waves lapping gently on the shore, reality is rather different. But there is hope.

Dr Lee Bartel is a professor of Music at the University of Toronto. His research has involved the use of music therapy for stress management as well as ADD and lead to the production of the Sound Oasis therapy systems. These systems play natural, sleep inducing sounds to help you get the sleep which is necessary for your health. There are several models to choose from, some with a fixed selection of sounds while other use interchangeable ‘sound cards’. The systems work on both battery and mains supply so they are ideal for travel, another situation which often causes lack of sleep. There’s more.

If you don’t think the sounds of the rain forest are for you, how about the nightwave? This system has a similar aim to the Sound Oasis, but uses a gentle pulsing blue light projected onto the bedroom ceiling. By synchronising your breathing with the pulsing light you can gently fall into the sleep you need.

Insomnia sounds trivial but is debilitating over time. Simple problem become insurmountable in the depths of the night and life seem to attract difficulties during the day. If you’re suffering from insomnia you owe to yourself and your loved ones to take a look the products which can help. No drugs, just simple soothing sounds to help you sleep the night away.

Everyone knows the feeling of difficulty in breathing during exercise, competitive sports, or any intense effort. It stands to reason that if you could increase your breathing performance, thereby increasing oxygen intake, that you could dramatically increase performance in virtually everything you do.

For years I had looked for a product that would increase my endurance and lung capacity. I had tried several breathing exercises that helped somewhat, but I can’t really say that it was noticeable. Then I happened along a product called PowerLung. They claim that this device can increase lung capacity and oxygen intake by more than 25%. While I was somewhat doubtful, I gave it a try.

Powerlung Sport

I found that PowerLung exercises your lung muscles. Just like any other muscle in your body, your lung muscles can be worked and strengthened. To do this, you have to work against resistance (just like weight lifting). PowerLung allows you to adjust resistance both in the inhale and exhale, which works all your lung muscles. Over time, I was able to increase the resistance, just like increasing weight when you are weight lifting. At the same time, I experienced a very noticeable improvement in my breathing. I really noticed improvement when playing basketball.

I’m an amateur athlete, but I put the bread on the table by managing an ecommerce company. So naturally, after launching PowerLung on our sites, I went looking for competing products to offer as well. What I found was that these products (Expand-a-Lung, SportsBreather, UltraBreather, etc) were like sucking/blowing through a straw. These were basically restrictive breathing devices (like a straw). My background is in engineering, and I realized that with these products you do not actually move anything except air. The formula for work is: Work = Force x Distance. If you are not moving anything, then there is no work. If there is no work, there is no muscle building! With a PowerLung, on the other hand, you are moving something a distance with the force from your lung muscles. That may not be the best technical explanation, but I know that the best way to build my biceps is by doing curls with a dumbbell or on a home gym: moving an object a distance (work). Same for building lung muscles, you must move something some distance. PowerLung is the only device I’ve seen that can do this.

In the past couple years we have sold PowerLung to professional athletes, asthma sufferers, pick-up basketball players, people looking to quite smoking, yoga professionals, musicians, people needing help getting around the house without getting out of breath, and more. PowerLung is truly a product that can benefit virtually anyone.
